Put the Needle on the Record

Isn't the record scratch sound effect getting kind of old?
I was driving on the weekend and listening to the radio. An ad came on for a hair replacement company which included a large scratch sound effect.

Typically these ads begin in an opposite direction than what the client is trying to say, they are somber, or simply mellow. Suddenly, with a dramatic needle-across-the-record scratch, the tempo changes to an up-beat ad with funky music and loud voice over.

Aside from DJs scratching records in HipHop music (and even that's not done as much these days), it's not really a common sound anymore. How many people still own turntables? I mean, CDs are quickly becoming a thing of the past, with the gaining popularity of MP3s.

What are your thoughts? Should a new, more timely sound effect replace the record scratch?
