Too bad, so sad!
I really enjoyed listening to the first 12 episodes of The Ricky Gervais podcast. The show is hilarious and very successful. It's cult status on the web has grown substantially. The show has even reached the mighty realm of the Guinness Book of World Records, for apparently becoming the world's most popular podcaster. According to pcpro.co.uk: The Office star's weekly broadcast for the Guardian website averaged 261,670 downloads per week during its first month to take it into the 2007 edition of the book - provided no other podcast beats it before the autumn publication date.
This is all good and dandy, but after episode 12, the show is going to start costing listener $6.95 (US) for 4 episodes. I mean, how lame is that?
The whole idea behind podcasting is it's underground, "FREE" appeal. They have forgotten (perhaps they never knew) what podcasting is all about. I can understand if they take the show to SYRUS, people PAY for that service, but to actually try to charge single listeners is really sad.
Gervais mentions on Episode 12, that they don't get paid for the show. Yet they have slipped in silly commercials for Channel 4's new season lineup. Surely they're getting a nice chunk of change for the ads!
Lame lame lame. Too bad, so sad...bye bye Ricky Steve and Karl, I guess I will resort to getting my Monkey News from the the web from now on.

Actually the ads and so forth were for Guardian Unlimited and their hosting company - they didn't make any money themselves.
However I agree that this is steep and that I probably won't be subscribing.
